Since 2023, our dedicated Staphyt field teams across France have been passionately studying a crop with massive potential: Camelina sativa.
Known for the high oil content of its seeds, Camelina is rapidly emerging as a highly promising feedstock for Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF).
Here is why this hardy plant is catching our attention as a strategic intercrop:
🌱 Smart Crop Rotation: Sown as an intercrop between two main cycles (such as before autumn cereals), it provides farmers with a valuable supplementary income without displacing primary food crops.
☀️ Extreme Climate Resilience: Camelina is incredibly rustic and fast-growing. It adapts remarkably well to climatic variations, extreme heat (withstanding temperatures over 40°C), and drought conditions. Even after severe stress, it can quickly bounce back as soon as conditions improve.
🚧 The Agronomic Challenges:
While it shows incredible promise, there is still work to be done. Currently, it is less suited to the climate of Northern France, not because it won’t grow, but because the late-season weather poses significant challenges during the harvest phase.

The crop’s emergence (germination phase) remains highly sensitive. Over the past few seasons, our teams have been rigorously testing and refining the technical methods required to secure successful crop establishment. We are also deeply focused on optimizing irrigation management to ensure consistent, reliable yields regardless of the climatic year.
