Cover crops are plants grown primarily for the benefit of the soil. They are an essential part of agriculture and offer many advantages.
Often a combination of crops, pulses or grasses, cover crops have a number of objectives:
- to reduce inputs
- cover the soil and rebalance it, by enriching it or absorbing nitrogen,
- maintain conditions favorable to biological activity,
- capture carbon from the air (carbon sink).
Depending on the case, the cover crop can then be dried to become fodder for livestock or used green for methanisation (intermediate energy crop).
During cover crops trials, Staphyt analyzes the quality and suitability of the combination or variety depending on the soil type. Depending on the purpose of the cover crop, the aim is to obtain the best possible yield. We analyze soil development at different stages: before planting and after mowing the cover crop. We offer analyses of feed value and methanogenic yield.
Staphyt has experimental stations located all over Europe to carry out your cover crop trials.
