The PFAS restriction in the EU

On the 7th of December 2023, Staphyt held a presentation entitled “Introduction to the PFAS restriction in the EU and the impact for your products”. The presentation was given by Katherine Peabody, REACH and Chemicals Regulatory Manager at Staphyt, and Lisa Gleichmann, REACH and Chemicals Regulatory Specialist at Staphyt. A restriction has been proposed under Annex XVII of REACH which will see the banning of PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances). The presentation aims to support our clients by providing insight into the restriction and into what actions they will need to take to comply with the restriction.

Lisa introduced the topic of PFAS and provided a description of the group of substances and the various human health and environmental hazards associated with them. This included information on the uses of PFAS and the rationale for implementing a restriction. Lisa then described the proposed PFAS restriction and gave a brief summary of other previous and upcoming PFAS restrictions such as the restriction on PFAS in firefighting foams.

Katherine explained the scope of the restriction and what criteria must be met for a substance to be considered a PFAS. She provided an update of the current progress of the restriction and expected timelines. The final section of the presentation discussed the impacts of the restriction on businesses and what actions can be taken by industry to prepare for the restriction. Katherine explains that this in a step-by-step process which includes methods to identify PFAS and some points to note regarding the identification of alternatives or substitutions.
